Our Story

cinemas located in the heart of the community.

REEL Cinemas is the UK's leading nationwide independent cinema chain with sites across England and Wales and offers an exceptional guest experience, giving everyone a warm welcome and keeping ticket prices low. REEL Cinemas began in 2001 when property businessman Kailash Chander (K.C.) Suri took over the Loughborough Curzon, a run-down 6-screen venue earmarked for a development project that would turn it into flats. But as he got to know the business, the staff and the customers, K.C. Suri started to fall in love with cinema. So he chose not to convert the building but instead restored it to its full art deco glory, with meticulous attention to detail. In November 2001, REEL Loughborough opened to huge success, and between 2003 - 2005 more acquisitions followed, including another vintage picture palace The Scala Cinema in Ilkeston.

From 2005 REEL Cinemas took on a different direction. In addition to established traditional venues, they started to develop new purpose-built locations. This reflected their new philosophy: to build a circuit of miniplexes - typically, five or six screen venues - located within underserved communities. As a result, they were bringing cinema to the doorstep of many towns usually seen as too small by other larger cinema chains.

This attention to location, the local community, and a determination to develop new ideas underpin REEL’s commitment to constant innovation and growth. Since 2018, the company has announced further expansion plans and unveiled its Reel Lounge concept. The Lounge is a beautifully appointed auditorium offering a state-of-the-art audiovisual experience, with stunning seats and art deco design, as a nod to the original cinema in Loughborough where the REEL story started.

The REEL circuit continues to expand, with new venues opening all the time and in new locations. Each will incorporate the Reel Lounge and cement REEL Cinemas’ ambition to bring the luxury cinema-going experience to audiences in small towns without the high admission price that usually accompanies it.
